Your port of call for fish and seafood

To answer the call of the open sea, nothing beats Connie & Ted's restaurant, known to all Angelenos (the name of Los Angeles' inhabitants) for its top-notch quality and fresher-than-fresh fish and seafood. Presiding over this temple is chef Michael Cimarusti, a lover of the deep and all it has to offer as well as a staunch defender of the oceans and sustainable fishing.

Do not be surprised to find 18 varieties of oysters, superb seafood platters and shellfish cooked in every imaginable way – the clam chowder is legendary. Michael Cimarusti has decorated his restaurant, which he named after his grandparents, with countless nods to the sea and to the men who live by and for it. Black and white snaps of US marines in 1944 rub shoulders with colour fishing photos and other knick-knacks with a sea theme, gathered over many years. Fair winds and bon appétit at Connie & Ted's!

Where the Sunset Strip meets the Rising Sun

The famous Sunset Strip runs for two kilometres between downtown and the ocean. The boulevard was transformed some years back into a veritable hub of restaurants, clubs and luxury brands. Katana is part of that scene and takes great pride in welcoming the host of stars who come to enjoy its take on Japanese-inspired cuisine.

Book a table in advance if you want to dine in this glamourous, oh-so-L.A. setting. Once seated, you have the choice of robatayaki, skewers traditionally prepared in the way the fishermen of Wakayama do (a village in the Kansai region of Japan) where food is grilled over bincho charcoal, sautéed vegetables, delicate sashimi or octopus with mango sauce, all exquisitely flavoured with a blend of Asian herbs and spices. And what better than a sake, in moderation of course, to wash it all down?

All the magic of Hollywood

The Tower Bar and Restaurant takes you back in time, transporting you to the chic and intimate atmosphere of the Hollywood of days gone by with its walnut-panelled walls, subdued lighting, carpets matching the deep tones of the padded leather sofas and perfectly laid tables.

The place has carefully nurtured a cosy, elegant haven, offering guests a thoroughly charming experience. In winter, the crackling fireplace adds to the welcoming ambiance and you sip a Sunset Bellini (Prosecco and peach purée) listening to a live pianist performing a jazz classic. In summer, enjoy a poolside lunch or dinner out on the terrace. From here, the views of the city are spectacular.

And so to the food: make sure you do not miss Sunday brunch, a fabulous fixed-price gourmet extravaganza. The table is a festival of mixed salads, grilled meats – the pork chops melt in your mouth – with potatoes and vegetables, and not forgetting the divine devilled eggs.

A waft of country air

So, what if you now want something other than trendy bars and clubs? Well, Eveleigh is just the ticket. With its slightly quirky, rural feel, the restaurant, built in a former orchard worked until the start of the 1920s, is a natural haven of peace and quiet.

You have the choice of the open-air patio – do not worry, outdoor heaters are provided when it gets cooler – or the rustic-style bar. Everything here is simple and friendly and you will enjoy a meal made from fresh local produce. The crushed peas with burrata cheese and spaghetti with crab are just two of the restaurant's star dishes. And as for the strawberry pound cake, it will delight the most discerning palate.

Destination Peru

Chef Ricardo Zarate decided to name his restaurant after his mother, Rosaliné. It is a tribute to his Peruvian roots which he showcases every day in his cooking.

Get ready for a culinary tour of South American classics in simple, natural surroundings. Dozens of wicker baskets with tumbling ferns hang from the ceiling. The menu sections have oh-so evocative names such as ‘Pachamama' (from the land) and ‘Mamaqucha' (from the sea) in reference to Peruvian goddesses.

Your discovery starts with a famous Pisco sour, a typical cocktail from the region with lovely lemony notes. If you are travelling with your family, why not choose the seafood paella? It is a treat you can all tuck into gathered around the table. Or maybe you would prefer a ceviche (raw fish dish marinated in juice) or the classic and popular lomo saltado (featuring sautéed beef fillet). A wonderful Peruvian escapade in the heart of Los Angeles.
