The former French concession, about six kilometres long and stretching out on both sides of Huaihai Street, has become the fashionable place in town.
Discover the many Art Deco jewels in this neighbourhood of opulent residences, built by the West in the 19th and early 20th centuries, now converted into hotels and luxury shops. Only the Nanjing district in the north rivals the former concession in luxury, but you may find that the former is more ostentatious. Take the time to lose yourself in quiet havens lined with plane trees, like Café Petanque, with its rows of tables on the patio, or Rouge Baiser Elise, where people come to buy French linen and tableware.
A little further in Tian Zi Fang, unpretentious brick houses have been converted into small shops and eateries, frequented by a mix of young Shanghainese executives and a cosmopolitan crowd.
